Readers of Travel + Leisure, the world’s leading travel magazine, have rated Bangkok the world’s best city in the publication’s 2008 World’s Best Awards. The Thai capital edged out last year’s winning city, Florence, which dropped to fifth place.
The eagerly anticipated World’s Best Awards—now into their 13th year—are recognized by both travelers and the tourism industry as one of the most credible sources of travel-related information, as all entries in the listings are voted for by readers of the magazine.
“Bangkok has finally come of age, as this award shows,” said Matt Leppard, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia. “Not only is this thriving metropolis developing into one of the world’s most liveable cities, it is also a must-visit on any tourist’s Asian itinerary.
“World-class hotels and resorts, some of the region’s best shopping and culinary experiences, an efficient transport system, and, of course, unique cultural attractions all make Bangkok one of the world’s most desirable places to be right now,” said Mr. Leppard.
Bangkok also topped the list of the Top 10 Asian cities, as it did last year, with Chiang Mai at number 3, Hong Kong at number 4, Shanghai at number 6, Siem Reap at number 7 and Hanoi at number 9. Asian hotels, spas and airlines also scored highly in the awards, with Singapore Airlines voted the number 1 international airline.
The annual Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards will be published in Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia in its September edition, available region-wide on September 1.
