Visionary developer The O Property Collection is now offering for public sale the Villas by Shigeru Ban on Dellis Cay, its private island retreat in the Turks & Caicos Islands, British West Indies.
Introduced at Art Basel 39 in Basel, Switzerland earlier this month, and now being marketed by Asia Pacific Properties in Hong Kong, Ban’s 15 limited-edition villas will sit on unique beachfront plots of around one acre on the sweeping south coast of the exclusive hideaway.
Big-budget buyers can purchase the fifteen villas in the Japanese architect’s collection, and share one of the rarest living experiences in the world with the likes of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, who were among the island’s first purchasers. Ownership of Villas by Shigeru Ban starts at US$8.5 million.
Ban, who is internationally renowned for his use of unusual materials, is better known in his native Japan for the elegant private homes he creates – and it these that have inspired his Dellis Cay villas. The master architect has created two contrasting four-bedroom designs, Maison H and Maison S, both of which come with their own one-bedroom over-water pavilion, Maison O, linked to the main villa by private bridge.
Maison H is an alluringly classic and simple design, centred on an expansive double-height living and dining space. Fully retractable glass walls open out onto a reflecting pond and swimming pool, making the villa look as if it’s floating on water. Meanwhile, Maison S has a more futuristic and organic style, with sinuous curves that gently enfold a circular reflecting pond before flaring out towards an angular swimming pool and the ocean beyond. Contrasting they may be, but, as Ban explains, “Both villas aim for the closest possible relationship between the interior space and the predominant presence of the ocean.” As with all the properties on Dellis Cay, Villas by Shigeru Ban will be fully serviced and managed by the award-winning Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
Born in Tokyo in 1957, Ban studied in the US but is now based in Paris. He has worked as a consultant for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and his designs for lightweight, easily assembled emergency housing have been used all over the world. His recent projects include the Pompidou Centre in Mertz, France, the Curtain Wall house in Tokyo and the globetrotting Nomadic Museum.
Following the island’s groundbreaking ceremony on June 20, hosted by chairman and CEO of The O Property Collection Dr. Cem Kinay, the Piero Lissoni-designed phase one of the project, including the Mandarin Oriental Dellis Cay, is now under construction. While these properties are already spoken for, Zaha Hadid’s singular D villa, a one-of-a-kind residence is also currently available for US$20 million. The construction of the island will be completed by Dellis Construction Limited and will open in 2010.
