New Prix Meurice 2009 blog displays finalists and their works while showcasing commitment to French culture
With a nod to its artful past and a promise of creativity, Le Meurice in Paris announces the 2(nd) annual Prix Meurice for Contemporary Art. The Dorchester Collection hotel, which embraces the French Genius for the Art of Living, intends for the prize to highlight its commitment to young artists on the French scene. The public is invited to participate through a new blog revealing the artists, their works, and Le Meurice's passion for spreading culture to the masses.
A jury of arts professionals including the Chairman of the Louvre and the Artistic Director of FIAC selected the finalists for the Prix Meurice. The public is invited to peruse the artists, leave comments and vote at www.prixmeuricepourlartcontemporain.com. Those picking the eventual winner will be entered in a drawing for a gift from Le Meurice.
The winner will be announced on September 30, 2009. The reward is international exposure, 10,000 Euros for the artist, and 10,000 Euros for his or her gallery.
This year's prize includes works of sculpture, installation, photography, performance and more. Finalists include:

Last year's Prix Meurice went to Zoulikha Bouabdellah, represented by Galerie La B.A.N.K., for her monumental sculpture, Le Baiser (the kiss). Along with 20,000 Euros, she enjoyed exhibitions at Art Dubai, Art Brussels, the Austrian Cultural Forum, MoCADA, and CIP in New York and London.
Art and creativity have always been welcome at Le Meurice, a magnet for artists - notably surrealist painter Salvador Dali, who was an annual guest for decades. In 2006, Holtmann tapped French designer Phillipe Starck to lead an "invisible transformation" of Le Meurice with renovations of public spaces including La Dali restaurant where Starck's daughter, Ara, created a monumental canvas. Award-winning designer Charles Jouffre is now redesigning the hotel's guestrooms and suites.
