Children’s community arts initiative, the Giant Puppet Project, celebrates its fifth year
This weeked, Siem Reap’s pioneering Hôtel de la Paix was the proud sponsor of a giant rabbit at the city’s fifth annual Giant Puppet Parade. This local children’s community arts project provides a creative platform for disadvantaged children to foster and promote self-expression and confidence through art, and helping to build a sense of community.
Under the guidance of student artists from the Phare Ponleu Seplak art school in Battambang, giant puppets are created by over 500 children in fun workshops, and incorporate unique educational, cultural or ecological themes such as road safety, hygiene, local cultural appreciation and environmental awareness. 12 local organisations and schools participated in the 2011 workshops, with the spectacular results bursting onto the streets of Siem Reap in the annual parade on Saturday 19 February 2011.
