The timing of this initiative is especially meaningful as global awareness around plastic waste continues to grow.

In recent years, countries across Asia — including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia — have introduced new restrictions on imported plastic waste, highlighting the increasing challenges of managing the world’s discarded materials.

In this evolving landscape, the hospitality industry can play a powerful role — not only by reducing plastic use on property, but also by inspiring travellers to rethink their own habits and make more sustainable choices.

Plastic-Free July underscores that eliminating single-use plastic must be the ultimate goal,” said Nina Boys, Vice President of Sustainability for Beyond Green.

Our members are leading by example – not only by addressing plastics within their operations and supply chains, but also by supporting their communities and inspiring guests to take meaningful action. As plastic pollution continues to actively harm ecosystems across the globe, leadership and innovation from the hospitality sector have never been more important.”

From the U.S. to Costa Rica, Spain, Kenya and beyond, all Beyond Green member hotels have eliminated single-use plastic water bottles across their operations – a core brand requirement since the portfolio’s founding. In addition, Beyond Green properties implement various other initiatives that go beyond simple swaps to create lasting change, including:
  • Arenas del Mar (Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica): At Arenas del Mar, sustainability is an integral part of everyday operations, creating a guest experience that actively reduces and eliminates plastic waste. Single-use plastics in rooms have been eliminated entirely, and bamboo straws – an idea sparked by a hotel gardener who became an entrepreneur – have replaced plastic ones. Glass bottles for house-made drinks and partnerships with suppliers to cut plastic packaging ensure every detail supports a lower-impact stay. Guests are also encouraged to join beach cleanups using bags made from repurposed staff uniforms, offering a meaningful connection to local communities and conservation efforts.
  • Talaia Plaza EcoResort (Begur, Spain): Talaia Plaza EcoResort offers travellers not just a sustainable stay, but an invitation to engage with local stewardship efforts. The resort organizes regular beach and forest cleanups that guests can participate in, fostering an active role in protecting Costa Brava’s natural beauty. Through its Plaza Terra Viva Foundation, Talaia turns plastic waste into educational toys, helping visiting families and local children see the value of recycling and sustainability. Circular systems integrated into resort operations reflect a deep commitment to eliminating single-use plastics, ensuring guests experience an authentic, responsible approach to hospitality.
  • andBeyond Bateleur Camp (Masai Mara, Kenya): Set beside the Great Rift Valley, andBeyond Bateleur Camp offers guests an unforgettable opportunity to witness Africa’s majestic wildlife year-round. This luxurious safari camp is deeply committed to protecting the pristine environment of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Through its on-site water bottling plant, the camp eliminates the need for more than 20,000 single-use plastic water bottles each year — a step that not only preserves the natural landscape but also conserves an estimated 60,000 litre of water. This is especially significant considering that producing just one litre of bottled water can consume up to three litres in total, accounting for the water used in processing, packaging, and filling.
  • The Ranch at Laguna Beach (Laguna Beach, California, USA): At The Ranch, the guest experience is designed to minimize environmental impact while fostering deeper connections to the surrounding Laguna Beach community. Plastic key cards have been replaced with bamboo keys, keeping tens of thousands of plastic cards out of landfills. The team also conducts monthly cleanups of Aliso Creek, removing thousands of pounds of trash — including single-use bottles — that could otherwise reach the Pacific Ocean. During on-property farm tours, guests learn about the measurable impacts of the hotel’s sustainability efforts and how, simply by staying at The Ranch, they are actively supporting initiatives that protect and restore local ecosystems. Through partnerships like Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Hotels initiative, The Ranch extends its commitment beyond the property to help safeguard Laguna Beach’s coastal environment.
  • The Palms Hotel & Spa (Miami Beach, Florida, USA): The Palms Hotel & Spa is committed to minimising single-use plastics throughout the property, replacing plastic bottles with aluminium and glass alternatives. Wooden key cards, large-format in-room amenities made 100% from recycled ocean-bound plastics, and textile laundry bags further reduce waste. Innovative swaps include compostable pasta straws, coffee pods and wooden beach cutlery. As a Four Green Key Global certified property, founding member of Miami Beach’s #PlasticFreeMB and with Essensias’ Surfrider Ocean Friendly Restaurant’s accreditation, The Palms demonstrates how hotels can collaborate with local initiatives to advance sustainability and reduce plastic pollution.
  • Dromoland Castle (Newmarket-on-Fergus, Ireland): At Dromoland Castle, plastic-reduction efforts are thoughtfully woven into the guest experience. Bulk toiletry dispensers across guestrooms eliminate unnecessary single-use plastic waste, while elegant, reusable coasters have replaced disposables in the bars. The hotel has also removed individually packaged milk portions in favour of dispensers, further minimising excess packaging and aligning with best practices for low-waste luxury.
Offering travellers a more intuitive way to find and book inspiring, impactful hotel experiences, each property within the Beyond Green portfolio undergoes rigorous vetting based on over 100 sustainability indicators that align with global tourism best practices and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Across the world, the brand’s member properties are dedicated to three core pillars essential to sustainable tourism - Nature, Culture, and Community – ensuring they play their part in preserving our planet for future generations while delivering exceptional guest experiences.
