Located just 10 minutes off the highway between Rome and southern Florence, La Badia is a former Benedictine abbey with roots dating from the 6th to the 12th centuries.
The estate includes a rare dodecagonal tower, a historic Romanesque church, expansive gardens, and nearly 30 acres of unspoiled Umbrian landscape. The hotel was most recently operating as a 27-room, 4-star property, but it will be completely reimagined under the helm of Marie-Louise Sciò, guided by her vision of timeless elegance that accentuates and elevates the estate's unique, inherent character.
The transformation will bring to life a timeless hotel with 24 finely crafted rooms, set amid meticulously designed gardens that honour the spirit and serenity of the original abbey. Guests will experience a retreat offering sophisticated comfort and a deep connection to the soul of the region. Amenities will include an outdoor swimming pool, a full-service spa with treatment cabins, a curated boutique, tennis court, fitness area, restaurant, and bar.
The Group's decision to invest in La Badia was rooted in a desire to offer travellers a true sense of place—an immersion into the rich cultural fabric of the remarkable Alto Lazio / Bassa Umbria region. The magnificent town of Orvieto, with its heritage dating back to the Etruscans, embodies the layered history, vibrant traditions, and unspoiled charm that define the Pellicano Hotels experience. Here, guests can move beyond the surface, connecting with authentic local culture and exploring the surrounding area—including Bolsena, Civita di Bagnoregio, and Lubriano—in a way that feels deeply enriching and naturally beautiful.
The Group has also secured the acquisition of an adjacent property—a charming addition overlooking Orvieto—that will enhance the overall guest offering and support Pellicano's commitment to curating deeply local and immersive experiences.
With an investment of more than €43 million—covering both acquisitions and extensive restoration—this project marks a compelling new chapter in Pellicano Hotels' mission to uncover Italy's most unexpected and authentic destinations, far from the well-trodden tourist routes. At the same time, it reinforces the Group's role as a guardian of Italian heritage, reinterpreting it for the discerning contemporary traveller while remaining deeply rooted in the true essence of each place.
“La Badia is a project that speaks to our passion for uncovering Italy's gems in quietly extraordinary places,” said Marie-Louise Sciò, CEO and Creative Director of Pellicano Hotels Italy.
“It forms part of a growing pipeline that already includes the much-anticipated reopening of La Suvera in Pievescola, set for 2027. We're just getting started—watch this space for more.”
