For the third year, The Ports of Stockholm awarded Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Symphony as the winner of The Environmental Buoy Diploma for its environmental efforts. Crystal Symphony was chosen from among 80 vessels.

Since 2000, The Ports of Stockholm have selected one cruise ship annually as the winner of The Environmental Buoy Diploma, given to cruise ships and their crews in recognition of superior environmental efforts in the Baltic Sea. The award was presented to Crystal’s president, Gregg Michel, on Tuesday, March 17 at the annual Cruise Shipping Conference Miami.

“Crystal Symphony has a high and uniform quality to its environmental efforts, with substantial commitment of personnel and good handling of, amongst other things, waste separation at source and black and grey water management,” says David Schubert, Passenger Marketing Manager for the Ports of Stockholm. “It is important to us that the cruise ships arriving in Stockholm respect the sensitive Baltic Sea environment.”

“Crystal Cruises is very proud to once again receive The Environmental Buoy Diploma,” says Michel. “Like the Ports of Stockholm, Crystal Cruises and our employees throughout the world place the utmost importance on the respectful treatment of the environment. Including training in conservation and waste management, our shipboard and shore-side personnel receive continuous environmental-awareness education.”

Crystal Cruises has long been committed to environmentally conscious practices aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. Most recently, the line introduced 100% recyclable EcoHangers on its ships, an alternative to the nearly nine billion wire and plastic hangers filling landfills each year. Additionally, Crystal utilizes washable, reusable garment bags rather than plastic bags for onboard laundry presentation. An in-house audit of its ships’ lighting and energy consumption resulted in measures that have saved more than 960,000 kWh – equivalent to eliminating more than 5,000 light bulbs, or nearly 200 tons of fuel, per year.

Crystal Symphony will visit Stockholm during several Baltic and Northern Europe voyages from June through August. Crystal’s Northern Europe voyages are value priced, with Celebration Savings offering up $1,500 per person savings, low air upgrade fares, and an All Inclusive – As You Wish $1,000 per person credit.
