Jaume was born into the family business of a traditional Spanish charcuterie, where his grandfather gave him his first insight into the culinary world. Khun Benz grew up in rural Thailand learning the subtleties of Thai cooking from her mother and grandmother from an early age. These events were happening virtually at the same time – but 9,600 kilometers, or 6,000 miles, apart. Today, Khun Benz and Jaume have come to Soneva Kiri to create some exceptional dining experiences:

After spending his childhood learning about traditional Spanish cuisine as he helped out in the family kitchen, Jaume still frequently cooked for his family and friends to showcase his culinary talents, whilst studying to be a lawyer. However, his love of food won out and he changed his law books for a set of chef’s knives at the culinary school in Sant Pol de Mar, Barcelona.

After three years of study, Jaume left the culinary school to join the lauded innovative chef of the time, and the youngest chef in Europe with 2-Michelin Stars – Jean Paul Vinay at El Bulli. Another key figure in Jaume’s career path was Catalan chef Termin Puig.

After twelve years working in some of Spain’s best kitchens, Jaume took the role of executive chef with a hotel chain in Andora, following which he relocated to the Caribbean - in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Now after 27 years of creative cuisine, Jaume brings his passion to Soneva Kiri, where his talents can be experienced in tree-top dining and a score of other locations.

On the other hand, Khun Benz is returning to her homeland after an absence of almost ten years. A skilled Thai chef, Khun Benz was enticed to Soneva Fushi in the Maldives to add an additional Asian depth to the dining alternatives. In appreciation of her outstanding service, Six Senses founder, Sonu Shivdasani, is bringing her back home to Thailand, this time with the enticement of her very own restaurant at Soneva Kiri, aptly named ‘Benz’.

Khun Benz vast repertoire of Thai dishes will be presented in a classic wooden Thai structure stilted amongst the mangroves fringing Klong Yai Kee, indicative of traditional settings that one discovers when travelling up-country on the banks of the Chao Praya river at its source.

In the truest form of SLOW LIFE (Sustainable-Local-Organic-Wholesome Learning Inspiring-Fun-Experiences), almost all the ingredients used at Benz are produced either on Koh Kood or nearby Koh Chang, whilst the dining experience itself is one of true authenticity. Dinner is also accompanied with a concert of fireflies.

Just off-property, guests take a splendid Aquasense motorboat from Dragon Jetty to Klong Yai Kee, then meander through the mangroves to Benz. There is a 4-wheel drive option for the ten-minute trip if the sea is choppy.

Soneva Kiri opens in September 2009 on the island of Kood, to the south-east of the Gulf of Thailand. Guests arriving at Bangkok’s Suvarnbhumi International Airport are met on arrival and transferred to the Soneva Kiri private plane for the one-hour trip to Soneva Kiri’s own airstrip – then a five minute motorboat transfer to the resort.
