How our unique ranking method powers la liste’s go-to-guide for global travelers

“LA LISTE stands apart from any other ranking and has nothing in common with ‘pay to play’ award organizations,” explains Jörg Zipprick, LA LISTE’s co-founder who designed LA LISTE’s proprietary algorithm. “Think of it as the ranking of all rankings. LA LISTE’s meta classification aggregates over 300 travel guides, rankings, media, and customer reviews to rank the Top 1,000 World’s Best Hotels, which are now listed in our multilingual app with restaurants and pastry shops, as part of our selection of 5,000 outstanding international hotels.”

To compile its unique hotel ranking, LA LISTE aggregates reviews and results from over 300 travel guides, other rankings, media publications, and customer review sites, both national and international.

From this research, 5,000 exceptional hotels emerged, each of which is now featured in the app. Using its proprietary algorithm, LA LISTE calculates a weighted average out of 100 for each entry and uses this to rank the Top 1,000 World’s Best Hotels on the planet.

The LA LISTE Top 1,000 World’s Best Hotels are ranked from the 5,000 exceptional LA LISTE Hotels in the mobile app. The ranking is also presented on LA LISTE website by country and by category.

Top destination, top category

More than 100 countries are represented in LA LISTE’s Top 1,000 World’s Best Hotels 2023. If the US dominates the ranking with the most hotels overall, top European historical touristic destinations include Italy, France, and UK.

China leads Asia with more than 80 hotels. Highlights of top country winners: The luxury Italian jewel set on a seahorse-shaped island in Jumeirah Bay Bulgari Hotel & Resorts in Dubai, Best Hotel in UAE; legendary Marbella Club Hotel is Best Hotel in Spain; lakefront Swiss-icon Park Hotel Vitznau, Best hotel in Switzerland; and iconic Royal Mansour Marrakech shines as Best Hotel in Morocco and Best Hotel in Africa.

New Hotel Player Award : HABITAS Group is a true disruptor in the market, bringing hotels that thrive on community spirit and a sense of connection - 'luxury for the soul' - to diverse locations from Tulum (the group's first opening in 2016) to desert, rural and coastal locations in Saudi Arabia, Chile, Namibia, Morocco, and upstate New York, offering a sense of well-being that money alone cannot buy.

Innovation Hotel Award : Aman Group's Amankora, the first hotel group licensed to operate in Bhutan, brings a new approach to the resort concept with five lodges across the Himalayas, each a unique expression of the diverse landscapes, cultures and customs of the world's happiest country.

Hotel Opening Of The Year Awards : After the pain of the pandemic, 2023 is a boom year for outstanding hotel openings, from ultra-luxury on a grand scale at Atlantis The Royal in Dubai, UAE, to a chic relaunch of Hotel La Palma on Capri, Italy's most glamorous island, by Oetker Collection, and a jungle escape for adults at Naviva by Four Seasons on Mexico's Pacific coast.

Türkiye brings us the nec plus ultra of sophistication on the shores of the Bosphorus at The Peninsula Istanbul, Capella opens its first hotel outside Asia in a striking heritage building in Sydney, Australia, while in Europe our attention turns to Germany's Lanserhof Sylt, a cutting-edge spa retreat on the wild North Sea.

Hidden Gem Hotel Awards : One of LA LISTE Hotels' most important ambitions is to map the world's best gems, taking adventurous travelers to a new level of hotel exploration. For 2023, LA LISTE is rewarding hotels on all seven continents for taking us to the most overlooked places.

In Antarctica, White Desert's Echo Camp brings futuristic, space-inspired pods to an alien landscape; Fogo Island Inn offers wild escapes off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada; immerse yourself in a forest hideaway at The Green O in Montana, USA; board Guntû, the world's only floating ryokan, to explore Japan's Seto Inland Sea; go off the beaten track at Galapagos Safari Camp, Ecuador; recharge your batteries on Sumba Island, Indonesia, at the coastal retreat Cap Karoso; venture (almost!) to Middle-earth at Minaret Station Alpine Lodge, Wanaka, New Zealand; return to the heyday of 1920s railway travel at Kruger Shalati, the train on the bridge in Kruger National Park, South Africa; and spice up your surf break at French Les Hortensias du Lac, one of the hipster but sophisticated jewels of Domaine de Fontenille in Hossegor, French Atlantic coast.

Style & Design Awards : All hotels recommended by LA LISTE have exceptional design and interiors, but our Style & Design Hotel Awards highlight five superlative examples in this field, from the jewel-like Villa Palladio in Jaipur, India, to The Fife Arms, a traditional country house hotel in Scotland near Balmoral, transformed by art dealers Hauser & Wirth; The Regent Hotel Carlton Cannes in France, an elegant landmark setting the standard on the French Riviera; Hotel Ještěd in Liberec, Czech Republic, a sci-fi former television station; and Banyan Tree, AlUla, Saudi Arabia, a contemporary tent design that blends into its ancient surroundings, a recently opened remote hotel by Accor group.

Ethical & Sustainable Hotel Awards : In the 21st century, hotels must strive to stand out in terms of ethics and sustainability.

LA LISTE wants all hotels to look to our award winners for exemplary behavior in this area, from a chic but wild retreat like Son Blanc Farmhouse in Menorca, Spain, to the ambitious environmental and social principles of Six Senses Shaharut Spa Hotel in Israel's Negev desert, to Bambu Indah, a riverside retreat in Ubud, Bali, with a revolutionary approach to waste, and Mashpi Lodge in Ecuador's cloud forest, which shares its birds, animals and bears with tourists to fund scientific research.

Heart & Soul Hotel Awards : Some hotels go the extra mile, putting their heart and soul into every detail, from the way guests are greeted to the turndown service at night. For 2023, LA LISTE's Heart & Soul Hotel Awards go to The Inn at Little Washington, Washington DC, USA, known for Patric O’Connell’s impeccable service and welcome; La Dimora, Da Vittorio, Brusaporto, Italy, where you can sit down to a six-course breakfast with the chef himself and his family; The Pig in the New Forest in Hampshire, the first opening of a hospitality group that has redefined casual luxury in the UK.
