Alongside the inaugural list of The World’s 50 Best Hotels, the 50 Best organisation will reveal the winners of a series of award categories designed to highlight outstanding properties and individuals across the travel spectrum.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2023 list, which will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Guildhall, London on 19 September, will be the highlight of three days of celebrations across the UK capital, featuring events in some of its most breathtaking venues.

The ranking is compiled by the votes from 580 anonymous experts and will reflect the very best travel experiences around the globe.

The voting panel – the 50 Best Hotels Academy – comprises a balanced mix of hoteliers, travel journalists, consultants and seasoned luxury travellers, selected by a group of industry-leading Academy Chairs across nine regions globally.

Mark Sansom, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Hotels, says: “We’re beyond excited to reveal the special awards categories for the first-ever edition of The World’s 50 Best Hotels. These additional awards are designed to complement the 50 Best ranking and act as additional accolades given to best-in-class hotels and individuals. They will provide consumers with easy visibility to properties and people who are operating at the pinnacle of excellence.”

The Special Awards

Continental Awards

The highest-ranked hotel in each continent (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania) will, by default, be named The Best Hotel in that respective continent.

These six outstanding hotels will be announced as the best in their geographic region at the 50 Best ceremony on 19 September.

Nikka Best New Hotel: This award goes to the hotel featured in the highest-ranked position on the list that has opened during the two-year voting window: May 2021 – May 2023. Nikka Whisky is the official partner of this award.

Flor de Caña Eco Hotel: This award champions one hotel’s outstanding efforts towards sustainability. The award is independently audited by the Sustainable Restaurant Association, which rates establishments that self-nominate for the prize based on a wide range of criteria, including environmental and social responsibility.

The hotel must provide documentation and complete an extensive questionnaire that assesses business practice across three core areas: Environment, Society and Procurement.

Existing accreditations, such as B-Corp status, will be considered in the assessment process. Flor de Caña rum is the official partner of this award.

The Lost Explorer Best Beach Hotel: This award will be given to the hotel placed highest on the list that is located within 20 metres of a beach. The Lost Explorer Mezcal is the official partner of this award.

Carlo Alberto Vermouth Best Boutique Hotel: This award will be given to the hotel placed highest on the list that fits all the criteria of a boutique property. 50 Best defines a boutique hotel as having fewer than 50 rooms and not being part of a large chain or group.

It is a design-driven property with a small number of rooms, showcasing personalised service and idiosyncratic features unique to its destination. Carlo Alberto Vermouth is the official partner of this award.

SevenRooms Icon Award: This award celebrates a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the hotel industry over the course of their career.

All 580 voters are asked to name an individual who has been a positive force in the global hotels sector. It is the only award in the 50 Best programme that is given to an individual and not a hotel property. SevenRooms is the official partner of this award.

Pre-announced Awards

Two awards will be revealed in the weeks building up to The World’s 50 Best Hotels ceremony.

Art of Hospitality Award: All 580 voters in the 50 Best Academy are asked to name the property where they have received the single-best hospitality experience within the two-year voting period.

The winning hotel offers outstanding service and attention to detail, and rewards its entire staff for the professional standards it upholds. The Art of Hospitality Award winner will be announced on 22 August.

Lavazza One To Watch Award: This title is granted to a hotel that currently sits outside the list, but which the 50 Best team believes has the potential to break into the ranking in future editions.

The One To Watch Award will be announced on 5 September. Lavazza coffee is the official partner of this award.

How the 50 Best voting works

The nine Academy Chairs each select a panel of voters from their region, ensuring a balance of hoteliers, travel journalists, consultants and seasoned luxury travellers.

Each Academy member casts seven votes for hotels in order of preference based on stays experienced in the two-year voting period up to April 2023. Voting is carried out individually and strictly confidentially on a secure site and the results remain confidential until after the list announcement. Academy

Chairs are not privy to, nor have any knowledge of, the votes cast by the voters in their respective regions, or any other regions; furthermore, they are not official spokespeople for the 50 Best brand.

A minimum of 25% of the panel will be renewed each year. All voters, aside from the Academy Chairs, will remain anonymous to eliminate the possibility of lobbying. None of the employees of 50 Best nor any sponsors associated with the awards has any influence over the results.

About The World’s 50 Best Hotels

Following the success of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and The World’s 50 Best Bars, 50 Best launched The World’s 50 Best Hotels in 2023, marking the brand’s first global launch since 2009. The World’s 50 Best Hotels event programme – including the awards ceremony and unveiling of the list – provides a unique opportunity to unite hoteliers, restaurateurs, bar owners, media, business travellers and luxury travellers at a captivating celebration of hospitality, passion and talent.
