The collection has been enriched over the years in a bid to personalize the bar, his bar, while remaining faithful to the atmosphere appreciated by the American author, a regular at the property.
Colin Field spoke to Journal des Palaces about his decision to sell his collection: "I've decided to part with a quarter-century or more worth of Hemingway bar items, to make room psychologically. I need to say that I am no longer the head bartender at the Ritz Paris. I needed more freedom and new adventures."
A wide variety of objects are on display, from twentieth-century champagne corks to hunting trophies, including some of the utensils used by the distinguished mixologist during his residency at the luxurious hotel on Place Vendôme. The items on sale will be on public display from March 9 to 12, at Christie's Paris premises at 9, rue Matignon. This is a unique opportunity to acquire rare objects that bear witness to the rich history of the Ritz, and its famous Hemingway bar.
While he may be willing to part with some of his favourite objects, Colin Field is far from hanging up his shaker. He has been a permanent guest at the Maison Proust, in the Marais, since December, where every Friday he prepares cocktails for visitors to the Parisian hotel bar.
He occasionally works as a bartender in French and international palaces, such as the Hôtel Barrière Les Neiges in Courchevel, or as an expert consultant to train the bartenders of tomorrow, as he did at the Shangri-La Le Touessrok in Mauritius. "I am taking the time to really live as a family with my beautiful wife, Marina, and my five-year-old son, James. I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner as a family. I go out a lot with my wife and take my son to school. I am beginning to understand the happiness of living like a normal person, a family man, [...] I've missed out a lot on that and, while being a very small head of a very small company, I'm recovering a lot of happiness."
